Isaac Abravanel (Abrabanel)



Abravanel (Abrabanel), Isaac (1437–1508), Jewish theologian and statesman. Born in Lisbon, he served King Alfonso V of Portugal in state and financial affairs. Forced after the king's death to flee to Spain, he was employed by Ferdinand and Isabella until the Jews were expelled from Spain in 1492. He then lived in various Italian cities, eventually becoming a minister of state in Venice, where he died. He is best known for his extensive commentaries on the Bible.
