Roger Adams



Adams, Roger (1889–1971), U.S. chemist and teacher whose work included research on the molecular structure and laboratory synthesis of organic compounds. He contributed to medicine and industry by determining the organic composition of gossypol, the toxic cottonseed pigment; cannabinol, a compound in marijuana; and chaulmoogric, used in treating leprosy and by developing catalytic hydrogenation, a petroleum-refining process using a platinum oxide.
