Joseph Addison



Addison, Joseph (1672–1719), English writer and statesman, including service as secretary of state (1717–18). Author of plays and poems, it was for his lasting contribution to the English essay form that he is best remembered, especially those essays published in the Tatler and the Spectator, which he co-founded with Sir Richard Steele
