Shmuel Yosef Agnon
Agnon, Shmuel Yosef (Samuel Josef Czaczkes; 1888–1970), Israeli writer remembered for his novels and stories of Jewish life in his native Galicia and in Palestine. In 1966 he shared the Nobel Prize for literature (with Nelly Sachs of Sweden) for works that include The Bridal Canopy (1937) and The Day Before Yesterday (1945).
