Anna Ivanovna

Anna Ivanovna (1693–1740), empress of Russia from 1730. Elected puppet empress by the nobles' supreme privy council, she overthrew the council and, with German advisers, waged costly wars against the Poles and Turks and opened Russia's way to Central Asia.
