Saint Anselm

Anselm, Saint (1033?–1109), archbishop of Canterbury (from 1093), a founder of Scholasticism. He endured repeated exile for challenging the right of English kings to influence church affairs. Anselm saw reason as the servant of faith and was the author of an ontological “proof” of God's existence: the human idea of a perfect being itself implies the existence of such a being. Saint Anselm's Day is celebrated on April 21.
