Antananarivo

Antananarivo, or Tananarive (pop. 803,400), capital and largest city of Madagascar. Located near the center of the island of Madagascar on a mountain ridge and linked to other areas by railroad, it is a manufacturing and communications center. The University of Madagascar and the 200-year-old palace of the Merina rulers are located in the city.
