Sir Edward Victor Appleton
Appleton, Sir Edward Victor (1892–1965), English physicist who discovered the Appleton layer (now resolved as 2 layers, F1 and F2) of ionized gas molecules in the ionosphere. His work in atmospheric physics won him the 1947 Nobel Prize for physics and contributed to the development of radar. During World War II he helped develop the atomic bomb.
