Gulf of Aqaba



Aqaba, Gulf of, northeastern arm of the Red Sea, between the Sinai Peninsula and Saudi Arabia. Geologically part of the Great Rift Valley of Africa and Asia, it is about 110 mi (177 km) long and 5–17 mi (8–27 km) wide. At the northern end of the gulf stand the ports of Aqaba (Jordan) and Elat (Israel). The Egyptian blockade of Elat sparked the 1967 Arab-Israeli Six-Day War.
