Arecjuipa
Arecjuipa (pop. 634,800), city in southern Peru, capital of Arequipa department. Located at an altitude of 8,000 ft (2,400 m), between the Pacific Ocean and the Andes, Arequipa has a mild, dry climate. An important wool market and a crossroads of trade and transportation, its industries produce textiles, food, and shoes. Arequipa has frequently suffered severe damage from earthquakes.
