Oscar Arias Sánchez
Arias Sánchez, Oscar (1941–), Costa Rican politician. He served as the president's financial adviser (1970–72), minister of national planning (1972–77), and president (1986–90). Arias Sánchez denied U.S.-supported Nicaraguan contras operating bases in Costa Rica, and promoted peaceful regional negotiations, for which he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1987.
