Armadillo



Armadillo, armored mammals (family Dasypodidae) of the order Edentata, native to warm regions of the Western Hemisphere. There are 20 species, ranging in length from about 5 in. (12 cm) to about 5 ft (1.5 m). Largely insectivorous (insect-eating), they are usually nocturnal and live in burrows either excavated by themselves or deserted by other animals. Armadillos generally produce several identical offspring from a single fertilized egg.
