José Gervasio Artigas
Artigas, José Gervasio (1764–1850), Uruguayan military leader who championed the cause of national independence. He joined the 1810 Argentine revolt against Spanish rule but later fought against both Portuguese and Argentine troops. He was forced into exile after Brazil occupied Montevideo in 1820. An independent Uruguay was achieved only in 1828.
