Ashkenazim
Ashkenazim, Jews whose medieval ancestors lived in Germany. Persecution drove them to spread throughout central and eastern Europe and, in the 19th and 20th centuries, overseas, notably to the United States. Their ritual and Hebrew pronunciation differ from those of Sephardim (Jews originally from Spain and Portugal). Most of the Jews in the United States and the majority of the world's Jews are Ashkenazim.
