Associationism

Associationism, psychological school holding that the sole mechanism of human learning consists in the permanent association in the intellect of impressions that have been repeatedly presented to the senses. Originating in the philosophy of John Locke and developed through the work of John Gay, David Hartley, James and John Stuart Mill, and Alexander Bain, the “association of ideas” was the dominant thesis in British psychology for 200 years.
