Attlee, Clement Richard, 1st Earl (1883–1967), British politician and prime minister (1945–51). Attlee led the Labour party from 1935 and served in Winston Churchill's wartime coalition cabinet before becoming prime minister. During his administration he instituted a broad program of social reforms, including the National Health Service, and nationalized many industries and the Bank of England. Also during his administration, independence was granted to India, Burma, Pakistan, Palestine, and Ceylon.
