Augsburg Confession

Augsburg Confession, statement of Lutheran beliefs presented to the Diet of Augsburg on June 25, 1530. The Confession, largely the work of Philip Melanchthon, was an attempt to reconcile Luther's reforms with Roman Catholicism. It was rejected by Emperor Charles V, which sealed the break between the Lutherans and Rome.
