Nanjing

Nanjing, or Nanking (pop. 2,500,000), industrial and manufacturing city on the Yangtze River in east-central China. Originally the only capital of China, it is now the southern capital, Beijing being its northern counterpart. Oceangoing ships dock at the city's wharves and facilitate transportation of products which include steel, coal, petroleum, tea, grain, and vegetables. The Chinese Communists, the nation's ruling force since 1949, are responsible for greater industrial development. A 3-mi (5-km) bridge crosses the Yangtze at Nanjing.
