Edict of Nantes



Nantes, Edict of, proclamation of religious toleration for French Protestants (Huguenots) issued in the city of Nantes by Henry IV in 1598. Protestants were granted civil rights and freedom of worship. In 1685 Catholic pressure led Louis XIV to revoke the edict.
