Narcissus

Narcissus, in Greek mythology, name of a self-centered, handsome youth loved by many, including the nymph Echo. Having rejected all, he was denounced by the gods and sentenced to reflect upon his own image near a small pool. He gradually deteriorated until just a flower, the narcissus, remained. Echo, too, wasted away, leaving only her voice in the forest.
