Carry Amelia Moore Nation
Nation, Carry Amelia Moore (1846–1911), U.S. temperance agitator. Her campaign against liquor bars began in the “dry” state of Kansas. She became well known by smashing several saloons with a hatchet. Arrested on 30 occasions, she paid fines by selling souvenir hatchets and lecturing. She helped advance the national Prohibition movement that led to the passage of the 18th amendment.
