National Radio Astronomy Observatory



National Radio Astronomy Observatory (NRAO), U.S. observatory for radio astronomy that operates radio telescopes at Kitt Peak National Observatory, near Tucson, Ariz.; in Green Bank, W. Va.; and in Socorro, N.M., which has the Very Large Array, the world's most powerful radio telescope. Radio astronomy uses reflective dishes to collect radio waves that emanate from objects in outer space. The NRAO was founded in 1956 by the National Science Foundation, a federal agency.
