Navajo



Navajo, Native American tribe, thought to have migrated from the north to settle in Arizona and New Mexico c.A.D. 1000. They learned agriculture, weaving, and sand painting from the Pueblo. After the Spanish introduced sheep in the 1600s, they became shepherds. Raiders of Spanish settlements in the southwest, they were subdued (1864) by Kit Carson and held at Fort Sumner, N.M., until their resettlement on a reservation (1868), now over 16 million acres in Arizona, New Mexico, and Utah.
