Saint Augustine



Augustine, Saint (d. A.D. 604), Italian missionary and first archbishop of Canterbury (from 601). A Benedictine monk, he was sent to England by Pope Gregory the Great to convert the populace and bring the Celtic Church under Rome's control. He was given support by King Ethelbert of Kent. His feast day is May 27 (May 26 in England and Wales).
