Automobile racing
Automobile racing, sport in which specially designed or adapted motor vehicles race indoor or outdoor courses. Dating from 1894 in France, races include the Grand Prix (worldwide series culminating in world-champion driver), stock car (special equipment on standard vehicles), midget car, sports car, and drag (acceleration competition). Major U.S. races include the Indianapolis 500 and the Daytona 500 (a stock-car race).
