Avoirdupois

Avoirdupois, English system of weight in which 1 lb contains 16 oz, in contrast to troy weight, another English system, in which 1 lb equals 12 oz. In the United States, commodities are generally weighed in avoirdupois. Most other countries use the metric system, to which Britain is gradually converting.
