Negligence

Negligence, in law, inadvertent failure to act with the degree of care a situation demands. The degree may be determined by a contractual obligation or what the law defines as the standard of conduct of a “reasonable” person. Conduct of an accident victim that contributed to an accident is contributory negligence and may prevent or reduce compensation. Negligence is usually a civil offense but may lead to a criminal charge, such as manslaughter.
