Nene

Nene, or Hawaiian goose (Nesochen sandvicensis), bird that lives among the lava in the hills of Hawaii. Through hunting and the ravages of pigs and dogs, it nearly became extinct. By 1950 only 34 survived, 17 in captivity. These were sent to England, where a small population was built up; some were taken back to Hawaii in 1962.
