New Britain

New Britain (pop. 148,188), city in central Connecticut. Settled in 1686 and named New Britain in 1754, this city was an 18th-century center for metal-working, where small arms parts as well as the first tinware made in North America were produced. Popularly referred to as the Hardware City, it is still the leader in the manufacture of hardware, tools for carpenters, and other metal items.
