New Delhi



New Delhi (pop. 7,206,700), capital of India, on the Jumna River, in the north-central part of the country. It was built by the British in 1912–29 to the south of Delhi, replacing Calcutta as the capital. Designed as a spacious city by the architect Sir Edwin Lutyens, New Delhi is noted for its official buildings, large shops, and industrial quarters.
