Newgate Prison

Newgate Prison, prison in London, England. Begun as a jail above the West Gate to London in the early 15th century, it continued to house hardened criminals along with debtors and minor offenders until its demolition (1902). The public often complained of the unsanitary and unfair conditions of this jail. Early in the 19th century, prison reform allowed debtors to await trial in separate facilities.
