U Ne Win

Ne Win, U (Shu Maung; 1911– ), Burmese general, political leader, and president (1974–81). After serving as prime minister, he assumed power in 1962 in an army coup and attempted to establish a form of socialist republic in Burma. After resigning the presidency, he remained head of the ruling party until 1988.
