Barnett Newman



Newman, Barnett (1905–70), U.S. painter. He was a member of the abstract expressionist school of painting based in New York City after World War II. Newman's large canvases often consisted of a simple, stark vertical image presented on a large field of color. His work influenced the color field movement of the 1960s as well as the minimalist artists.
