Jean Nicolet

Nicolet, Jean (1598–1642), French explorer who was probably the first European to visit the Lake Michigan area. In 1634 he set out by canoe through Lake Huron, entered Lake Michigan and explored Green Bay and the Fox River, making friendly contact with the Winnebago tribe.
