Chester William Nimitz

Nimitz, Chester William (1885–1966), U.S. admiral who commanded naval operations in the Pacific after the United States entered World War II. Credited with originating the strategy of “island hopping,” he had an outstandingly successful command. On Sept. 2, 1945, the Japanese surrender was signed aboard his flagship, the U.S.S. Missouri.
