Nineveh
Nineveh, ancient capital of Assyria, on the Tigris River, opposite modern Mosul, Iraq. Invaluable remains survive from its period of greatness under Sennacherib and Assurbanipal, in the 7th century B.C. Its destruction by Babylonian, Medean, and Scythian invaders in 612 B.C. ended the Assyrian Empire.
