Northumbria

Northumbria, Anglo-Saxon kingdom of the 7th–10th centuries, extending from the Mersey and Humber rivers in the south to the Firth of Forth in the north. It became the cultural center of England due to the civilizing work of monks. After Danes overran the kingdom, the north remnant became subject to Wessex.
