Novosibirsk



Novosibirsk (pop. 1,443,000), city in southern Siberia, Russian Federation, on the Ob River and the Trans-Siberian railway line. Founded in the late 19th century as a camp for railway workers, Novosibirsk developed into a river, rail, and air transport center during World War II. Its industries include textiles, heavy machinery, metals, and chemicals. Novosibirsk is the also the site of an important Soviet scientific research center.
