Nursery rhyme
Nursery rhyme, short, rhymed poem or tale intended to amuse children. The term nursery rhyme was first used in Blackwood's Edinburgh Magazine in 1824. There are 8 types of popular nursery rhymes: lullabies, singing game rhymes, nonsense rhymes, rhyming riddles, counting-out rhymes, tongue twisters, verse stories, and cumulative rhymes. The majority of nursery rhymes were created after 1600 and for many years, nursery rhymes were passed from generation to generation orally. Mother Goose's Melody (1781) was one of the first published compilations of nursery rhymes. Other collections include The Nursery Rhymes of England (1842) and The Oxford Dictionary of Nursery Rhymes (1951).
