Nursing home, residential facility for individuals, especially old people, needing medical or other daily assistance. Although some institutions in the United States are publicly funded or sponsored by religious organizations, most are operated on a profit basis by private owners. Laws regulating licensing and inspection are designed to protect residents from fraud and abuse.
