Oakland

Oakland (pop. 373,200), city on the east side of San Francisco Bay in northern California. The port handles over 5 million tons of cargo a year. Much of the farm produce of California's Central Valley passes through Oakland; it is also a major industrial city for shipbuilding, food processing, and oil refining.
