John Joseph Cardinal O'Connor

O'Connor, John Joseph Cardinal (1920– ), cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church. The former archbishop of New York City, he was named cardinal (1985) by Pope John Paul II. In 1983, he worked with other bishops to draft a letter, approved by the National Conference of Catholic Bishops, denouncing the nuclear arms buildup. He was an auxiliary bishop (1979) of the Military Ordinariate, serving members of the U.S. armed forces.
