Sea of Okhotsk



Okhotsk, Sea of, branch of the northern Pacific Ocean, 1,000 mi (1,600 km) long and 600 mi (970 km) wide, along Russia's eastern border and used as a travel and trade route to former Soviet ports. It joins the Sea of Japan by way of the Tatar and La Pérouse Straits. Travel is inhibited when severe storms occur between November and April, and ice and fog cover the sea.
