Olmec
Olmec, people of the southeastern coastal lowlands of ancient Mexico (c.500 B.C.–A.D. 1150). Skilled in artistic stone work, they produced huge sculptured basalt heads, beautiful jewelry, fine jade, white ware, and mosaics. They knew how to record time and write in hieroglyphics. Their culture influenced that of the Zapotec and Toltec.
