Omaha



Omaha (pop. 618,262), largest city in Nebraska, on the west bank of the Missouri River, established in 1854 after the Omaha Indians and U.S. government signed a peace treaty (1852). Covering 96 sq mi (249 sq km) surrounded by fertile farmland, it is a natural cattle industry site and expedites meat products via the Union Pacific Railroad. Home offices of the giant Mutual of Omaha insurance company plus 34 other insurance groups are here. Among its schools are the medical college of the University of Nebraska and, just outside the city, Boys Town, for disadvantaged youths.
