Oxford



Oxford (pop. 115,800), city of south-central England, the seat of Oxford University. The city existed in the early 900s. The university began to form in the early 1100s. Standing on the Thames River (known locally as the Isis) where it is joined by the Cherwell, Oxford is rich in historic buildings, including the many colleges, the Ashmolean Museum, the Bodleian Library, the cathedral, and the Norman castle. The city is the county seat of Oxfordshire.
