Oxford University, English university in Oxford comprising nearly 50 affiliated but autonomous colleges and halls, a great center of learning since its foundation in the 12th century. The oldest men's college is University (1249), and the oldest women's is Lady Margaret Hall (1879). The major university library is the Bodleian.
