Panama Canal Zone
Panama Canal Zone, strip of land (553 sq mi/1,432 sq km) extending 5 mi (8 km) on either side of the Panama Canal. The Canal zone was controlled by the United States until Oct. 1979, when Panama took control after U.S.-Panamanian treaties were ratified by the U.S. Senate (1978).
