Mungo Park

Park, Mungo (1771–1806), Scottish explorer of West Africa. He made 2 exploratory journeys along the Gambia, upper Senegal, and Niger rivers (1795–97 and 1805–06), the former described in Travels in the Interior of Africa (1799). He drowned at Bussa during an attack by hostile Africans.
