Charles Stewart Parnell
Parnell, Charles Stewart (1846–91), Irish nationalist, leader of the Irish Home Rule movement. A member of the British Parliament from 1875, he obstructed parliamentary business, demanding attention to Irish land reform, and his supporters' agitation persuaded William Gladstone to adopt a home rule policy. His political career was ruined in 1889 when he was named correspondent in a divorce case.
